Aug/September Subscription Box: Cleanse, Prepare & Shave Smoother

Posted by Bradley Jones on

A better shave often comes down to what happens before you pick up the razor. Properly cleansed skin, softened facial hair and a little extra protection can make the difference between a shave that simply gets the job done and one that feels effortlessly smooth.

This month’s Discovery Box is all about getting that preparation right. We have brought together a rich artisan shaving soap and matching pre-shave oil with an indulgent cream cleanser, creating a simple routine that cleanses, conditions and prepares the skin before the first pass of the blade.

What is The Personal Barber Shaving Club?

The Personal Barber Shaving Club is a regular subscription that delivers carefully selected wet shaving and grooming products directly to your door. Each box introduces you to artisan makers, respected grooming brands and carefully chosen skincare, all selected to improve your routine while keeping it simple and enjoyable.

How the boxes work

Every 6 weeks we curate a new selection that follows one of three themes:

Pre-Shave – preparation and comfort
Post-Shave – recovery and skin health
Extra-Care – finishing touches beyond shaving

Between 16th August and 30th September, we return to Pre-Shave with a selection designed to give your razor the best possible starting point. From cleansing and gently refining the skin to softening the beard and improving glide, each step helps pave the way for a smoother, more comfortable shave.

The Personal Barber Grove Shaving Soap with illustrated Mediterranean fig grove label

The Personal Barber Grove Shaving Soap RRP £9.95

Handmade in Wales by our skilled artisan soapmaker, Grove is a premium, tallow-free shaving soap that combines traditional wet shaving performance with a nourishing blend of plant-based oils and butters.

Worked with a damp shaving brush, Grove builds into a rich, protective lather that softens facial hair and provides the cushion and slickness needed for a close, comfortable shave. Coconut, avocado and castor oils combine with shea butter, vegetable glycerine and vitamin E to help condition the skin and maintain moisture throughout the shave, leaving it feeling comfortably smooth rather than dry or tight.

Whether you prefer to build your lather in a bowl or directly on the face, the soap rewards a little time and attention with a dense, creamy consistency that helps reduce friction and allows the razor to glide smoothly across the skin.

The fragrance captures the green, sun-drenched character of a Mediterranean fig grove. It opens with fresh fig leaves, jasmine and delicate white florals before crisp foliage, citrus and warm amber emerge at the heart. As it settles, woody and earthy notes mingle with soft musk to give the fragrance a smooth, grounded finish. Essential oils of patchouli, lavender and lemon add further aromatic character to a scent that feels fresh and verdant, yet warm and refined.

Like all of our shaving soaps, the scent rinses away cleanly, allowing your aftershave or fragrance to take centre stage.

To use: Swirl a slightly damp brush over the surface of the soap for 10 to 15 seconds until well loaded. Build your lather in a bowl or in the palm, gradually adding water until it develops into a soft, creamy lather with a luxurious sheen, usually after around 60 seconds of whipping.

Ingredients: Stearic Acid (Palm), Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil (sustainable), Persea Americana (Avocado) Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Glycerine (Vegetable), Alpha-Tocopherol (Vitamin E) Oil, Parfum, Citral, Eugenol, Coumarin, Geraniol, Linalool, Limonene, Citronellol, Alpha-Isomethyl ionone, Acetyl Cedrene, Camphor, Beta-Caryophyllene, Terpineol, Vanillin, Pinene, Pogostemon Cablin Oil, Lavandula Oil/ Extract, Citrus Limon Peel Oil, Tetramethyl acetyloctahydronaphthalenes, Linalyl Acetate, Hexamethylindanopyran

The Personal Barber Grove Ultimate Pre-Shave Oil RRP £14.95

Our Ultimate Pre-Shave Oil returns in a new Grove edition, bringing the fresh, green character of our latest fragrance to one of the most effective preparation steps you can add to a traditional wet shave.

Massaged into damp skin before lathering, a few drops create a lightweight protective layer that helps soften coarse facial hair and smooth the skin's surface. This reduces resistance as the razor passes over the skin, improving glide and helping to minimise razor burn, redness and irritation.

At the heart of the formula is our carefully balanced blend of cold-pressed oils. Unlike oils extracted using high levels of heat, cold pressing helps preserve their naturally occurring fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins, allowing them to condition and nourish the skin while you shave.

Blackcurrant seed oil is rich in fatty acids and valued for its skin-calming properties, while jojoba closely resembles the skin's natural sebum and provides lightweight hydration without clogging pores. Hemp and safflower oils help condition and support the skin, while fast-absorbing watermelon seed oil keeps the formula light and avoids the greasy finish associated with heavier shaving oils. Vitamin E provides additional antioxidant and conditioning benefits.

The Grove fragrance complements the ritual beautifully, bringing green fig leaves and crisp foliage together with citrus, soft florals, warm amber and an earthy, woody base. Lemon peel and patchouli oils add natural citrus brightness and aromatic richness, creating a scent that feels fresh and verdant at first before becoming warmer and more grounded as you shave.

Used beneath the matching Grove Shaving Soap, the two work particularly well together, layering the fragrance while giving your skin and beard the preparation needed for a smoother, more comfortable shave.

To use: Apply a few drops to damp skin and allow it to absorb for around 30 to 60 seconds. This is the ideal time to build your lather. The oil will soften the hair and prepare the skin for a smoother shave. Apply your shaving lather directly on top without rinsing, then proceed to shave.

Ingredients: Ribes Nigrum Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil, Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil, Citrullus Lanatus Seed Oil, Carthamus Tinctorius Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Parfum, Citrus Limon Peel Oil, Hexamethylindanopyran, Linalyl Acetate, Pogostemon Cablin Oil, Tetramethyl Acetyloctahydronaphthalenes.

Dr H Skincare Marine Collagen Cream Cleanser bottle and packaging

Dr H Skincare Marine Collagen Cream Cleanser RRP £39.90

Dr H Skincare takes a results-focused approach to everyday skincare, combining familiar skincare ingredients with active formulations designed to slot easily into your routine.

Their Marine Collagen Cream Cleanser is much more than a way to wash away the day. Its rich, creamy formula removes impurities and everyday build-up while helping the skin remain soft and comfortably hydrated, making it an excellent first step before shaving.

Marine collagen helps condition the skin for a softer, more supple feel, while shea butter supports its natural moisture barrier. Salicylic and glycolic acids provide gentle exfoliation, helping clear away dead surface skin and refine uneven texture. Niacinamide supports the skin barrier and helps improve tone, while a stable form of vitamin C provides antioxidant support and promotes a brighter-looking complexion.

It is an especially useful addition to a shaving routine. Cleansing away excess oil and build-up gives your lather a clean surface to work with, while gentle exfoliation helps create a smoother path for the razor. Despite all that, the nourishing formula avoids the tight, stripped feeling that can come from stronger cleansers.

To use: Massage a small amount onto damp skin using gentle circular motions. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water before applying the next step in your shaving routine.

Perma-Sharp & Bluebird Double Edge Blades

This month brings another opportunity to compare two very different double-edge blades and find the characteristics that work best with your own beard, skin and technique.

Perma-Sharp blades have earned a strong following among traditional wet shavers for their combination of sharpness and smoothness. They offer an efficient shave that can tackle tougher growth while remaining comfortable when paired with good preparation and a protective lather.

Bluebird blades offer an approachable alternative, balancing effective cutting performance with a smooth feel that makes them well suited to regular shaving.

Trying the two side by side is one of the pleasures of traditional wet shaving. Small differences in sharpness, coating and feel can completely change the character of a shave, and finding the right blade for your own skin is all part of refining the routine.

Better preparation, better shaving

There is no need to make shaving complicated. Often, the biggest improvements come from simply giving your skin and beard a little more attention before the blade gets involved.

This month’s Discovery Box brings those steps together. Cleanse and refine the skin, add a layer of protection, build a rich artisan lather and let a fresh blade do the rest. It is a considered approach to preparation that makes the shave smoother, the skin more comfortable and the whole ritual that little bit more enjoyable.
